Cherrapunji (India)


In a nutshell

60 km from Shillong one finds the beautiful sub divisional town of Cherrapunji in the East Khasi Hills district of the Indian State of Meghalaya. It is the wettest place in the world after Mawsynram. It is the traditional capital of a hima known as Sohra because of which the place was earlier called Sohra and Churra by the British. Then the name was later changed to Cherrapunji which means the "land of oranges". Cherrapunji attracts a number of tourists throughout the year because of its serene atmosphere, pleasant climate and ofcourse its living bridges which date back to almost 500 years.

How to Reach:

Air: The closest airport to Charrapunji is in Shillong but it only gets flights from Kolkata . So it is more convenient to Travel upto Guwahati (181km from Cherrapungi) and then travel to Cherrapungi by road.
Rail: Guwahati is the nearest railhead to Cherrapunji,which is in turn connected to various parts of the country.
Road: By road you can easily reach Cherrapunji from Guwahati (147 km),Aizwal (435 km), Imphal (589 km) and Agartarla (500 km).

Don Bosco Shrine

It is an amazing museum where one can find details of entire North Eastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura. This is the largest cultural museum in entire Asia.

First Presbyterian Church

This is the first Christian Church in the entire north eastern India. This was constructed in 1846

Mawsmai Cave

The Indian state of Meghalaya is famous for its many caves, which attract tourists from India and abroad. A few of the caves in this region have been listed amongst the longest and deepest in the world and Mawsmai Cave is one of them. Mawsmai Cave is located in the khasi hills in Meghalayas. Cave research in India, encompassing the study of speleology and biospeleology, is still in its infancy. Although there are thousands of caves in India, research expeditions occur in few states incuding Meghalayas.
