The largest city and the main shopping, business and tourism center of Assam-Guwahati, lies between the banks of Brahmaputra and the Shillong Plateau.The place gets it name form the words "guwa" and "haat" meaning "nut" and "market" respectively. Guwahati is the gateway to north-eastern states. It boasts of the titles of "city of eastern light", "city of eastern astrology" because of which it was once called Pragjyotishpura. The city finds references in the ancient historical books and is considered among the most ancient cities of Asia. The place is famous among tourists for its ancient monuments, religious sites and Scenic beauty.
How to Reach:
Air: Guwahati airport (20km from Delhi) is well connected various parts of the country.
Rail: Northeast Frontier Railway zone of the Indian Railways holds the Guwahati railway station which is well connected by express trains to major cities like New Delhi (1959 km), Chennai (2718 km), Bangalore (2932 km) and Chandigarh (2145 km).
Road: Guwahati is connected by road to various nearby states through The Inter State Bus Terminus.

Goddess Kamakhya is worshipped here.Ambubachi Mela is celebrated every year in the middle of June in this temple. (5 km from the main city on the Nilachal Hill).
Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden
It is the largest zoo of the North East (situated at Hengerabari Reserved Forest in the city).

Kanai Boroxi Boa Xil
It encompasses big rocks which are believed to have been seated upon by lord Krishna.
It holds cruise vessels like 'MV Mahabahu', 'Jolporee', 'Charaidew', 'MV Chandardinga', 'Alfresco', 'Baginadi' etc. (on the Brahamaputra river).
It is believed that Lord Shiva by using his third eye burnt Kamdeva at this place (On the peacock island in the middle of the Brahmaputra)
North-east's only amusement park named after Acco, the mythological king of amusement(Patgaon).
This planetarium is the only one of its kind in the North-Eastern region and a center of astronomical research.(Situated in Uzanbazar).
This is the only crafts village of the North East Zone Cultural Center (NEZCC).(Adjacent to Srimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra)
This beautiful tourist spot was once the ashram (hermitage) of sage Basistha(on Sandhyachal Hill).
An ancient Shiva temple built by Ahom king Pramatta Singha(on Dakini Jogini hill by the side of river Brahmaputra).
Madan Kamdev & Gopeshwar Mandir
This temple is situated near to Guwahati in a village named as Deuduar.
Temple of nine planets(situated on Chitrachal Hill).
It was excavated by the mighty king Bhagadatta to celebrated the 'swayambar' of his daughter Bhanumati who was married to Kourava prince Druyadhana. (Situated at the heart of the city at Uzanbazar).
Ugro Tara Temple
The Ugro Tara Temple is another shakti peeth temple where the eyes of sati were believed to have fallen.(At the heart of the city banks of Joarpukhuri).
